Sad morning...

Well, we knew it had to happen eventually, after all... they don't live forever. We had just played with him and cleaned his cage... so he had plenty of fresh food, water, and bedding. I think he led a pretty good life.

Pinky the hamster has passed on... I have no idea how old he was when we got him, but we've had him for quite a while. Personally, I think he lived beyond the usual life expectancy for such a creature, but I'm still a bit sad. I just hope the baby doesn't cry when she wakes up and finds out about it.

20 things about me...

I don't know how long this list will grow to... but since I've seen these on other people's blogs, I thought I'd give it a go. BTW... these are all things that are NOT on my website somewhere else... So:

1. I'm my mother's only child
2. My father had other children, but I've never met any of them. (Are you one of them?)
3. I love rich, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth dark chocolate more than life itself
4. The size I prefer to be is a 3-5 (American... not sure what that translates to anywhere else) But right now I'm more like a 12
5. My ideal "job" would be writing/producing/directing both films and animated videos to accompany all of my songs.
6. I love to be barefoot...
7. On hot days I prefer not to have BOTH my feet AND my armpits covered. One or the other needs to be bare, LOL
8. I like WB T.V. shows like Gilmore Girls and 7th Heaven.
9. I once shaved my head... completely bald.
10. When I was a child I wanted to be a Veterinarian.
11. I am allergic to cats, which is one reason I changed my mind about #10
12. My mother was an awesome artist.
13. My father wrote television screenplays... I have some of them in my possession. Not sure if they were ever used, but they include plots for the "Twilight Zone".
14. My father was a disabled WWII veteran who had no leges from the knees down.
15. I went to a camp when I was young where we were assigned a horse and taught how to care for it. I got to go there two summers in a row (for a week or two each time)
16. My second toe is longer than the first on both of my feet.
17. I cut my nails short on my left hand to press the strings for chords on the guitar, but I keep the nails on my right hand longer for fingerpicking.
18. I haven't written a song in quite a while. The muse has been avoiding me.
: (
19. I like to have fires in my backyard... we have a "dish" to make them in, and they are similar to campfires.
20. I grew up going to Reds games at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati

Okay, that's it. I'll do it again some other time when there's nothing better to write about ...

More gmail invitations

They're like love: The more you give away, the more you get. Here's the run-down for those who don't know:

Gmail is google's email. They are only allowing people to join with an invitation, probably to keep out spammers. It is unlike any other email account I've ever had... and I've had plenty. For starters, they give you 1GB (1000MB) of storage, and instead of deleting emails, you can archive those you might want to refer to in the future... then use google's search mechanism to find that great recipe or whatever later on. It's awesome!
: )

If you'd like an invitation, I'll need your current email address (to send it to), as well as your first and last name, so you may prefer to email me rather than leave that information here in the comments. I promise, I will not use any of your information for any purpose other than to issue the invitation!

Blogsurfing

One of the highlights of my day is the act of going through the blogs on my blogroll to check for updates, and in some cases, to read back through older posts I haven't yet had the pleasure of enjoying. These (you) people have become dear to me, like members of my ever-extending family.

In addition to those whose blogs already grace my growing blogroll, I also seek out new ones to add, as well as to just leave comments of encouragement for those who might need it. Sometimes I even learn something new! It is true that in the process of doing this I must wade through a lot of rubbish, but I think it's more than worth it... in order to find the true gems.

In light of this, consider today's post a huge toast, to all of you whose existence enriches my own! Cheers!

Unknown author, from the internet:

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine. I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back.

From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible.

How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word "refrigeration" mean nothing to you?

How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched 'Jeopardy' on television?

I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, "How about going to lunch in a half hour?" She would gas up and stammer, "I can't. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, it looks like rain." And my personal favorite: "It's Monday." ...She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together.

Because we cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our headaches... We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect!

We'll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Stevie toilet-trained. We'll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet. We'll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college.

Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of "I'm going to," "I plan on," and "Someday, when things are settled down a bit."

When anyone calls my 'seize the moment' friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Rollerblades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.

My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It's just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy.

Now...go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to... not something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting? Make sure you read this to the end; you will understand why I sent this to you.

Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry go round or listened to the rain lapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask "How are you?" Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head? Ever told your child, "We'll do it tomorrow." And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die? Just call to say "Hi"?

When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened gift... thrown away... Life is not a race. Take it slower.

Hear the music before the song is over.
To those who read this... I LOVE you & cherish our friendship.

"Life may not be the party we hoped for... but while we are here we might as well dance!"

Don't let these losers trample on YOUR rights!!!

I am dumbfounded by what I just read. It gives me the creeps. And I don't freak out over every little thing but this just galls me: http://chapterandverse.blogspot.com/2004/09/edwards-calls-for-blog-reform.html

Being a good mom

I've decided to put off getting a job or going back to school for now and concentrate on finding my son a new job first. He wants to return to school, and I want him to do so... but the company he's working for sends him out of town on a regular basis, which would not be conducive to school attendance. He prefers on-campus classes to online studies, because he's a very "hands-on" type learner and wants to have an instructor there to show him how to do things when he's not clear on what he's supposed to do... and I agree with him. So until I get him into a job which won't require travel, I'm not going to try to decide what to do for myself.

Hopefully if I dedicate myself to finding him a job, it won't take more than a week or two, maybe a month... because the clock is ticking and I really want him to get enrolled in school to continue his education ASAP. Wish us luck!

A truly moving speech by Arnold: Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Opinion / Op-ed / Schwarzenegger’s homage to America

Homeschoolers beware...

One of the ladies in my local homeschool group was kind enough to forward this ominous piece of evidence that the spirit of Hitler is not yet dead: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=40332

Back to life, back to reality...

Well, so far it looks like Ivan is going to miss us, but I'm still afraid to exhale just yet. My chest pain has diminished, though, so I'm thinking it probably was all stress...

I'm still going to wait at least another week before resuming normal activities (i.e. Body-for-LIFE) but I really want to wrap my head around it and get serious this time. I'm tired of half-assing it. If I want to have top-notch results, I'm going to have to be as good at eating clean as I am at sticking to my workout schedule. Oh yeah... when I get back to working out after taking a couple of weeks off, I'm going to be sore, sore, sore all over again.

Stressed is only desserts spelled backwards

That's my mantra for the day. With all of these storm worries and everything else going on I feel like I'm going to explode. I wish I had something better to talk about, but right now my whole life seems to be living from hurricane to hurricane, hanging on every freaking weather report. Dreading the possibilities... and wishing I lived someplace else. Then again, there is no SAFE place to live. Earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, volcanoes... no matter where you live there is some natural phenomenon to contend with.

Until we know what's going on weather-wise I can't get my car fixed, and until I get my car fixed I can't really get a job unless it's close to home... nor can I seriously consider re-enrolling in school, which was what I planned to do if I hadn't found a job by October. School is looking more and more likely, though, just by default since I haven't really tried very hard to obtain gainful employment. Perhaps subconciously I really DO prefer the act of seeking a higher degree over that of earning wages. Does that make me selfish and disloyal to my family? We're not starving, but we don't have all the things we need...

Friday, September 10, 2004

Okay... so what does THIS say about me?

Angina?

I'm not sure if it's all this stress about hurricanes and car repairs, unemployment and re-enrolling in school (no I haven't, but I want to if I can't find a job soon) but when I swallow food or beverage, or if I burp, I'm getting a godawful pain in my heart. My husband's company just changed insurance providers, however, so I don't have my new card yet. I don't want to go to the hospital and wait all day, but I don't want to die, either. I hope it's just nerves.

Annual Dilemma

AAAAAAAAAAArgh!

My dd's "open house" at school was scheduled for last Thursday, but due to the hurricane was rescheduled for tonight. No problem, you say? Oh... but there is a problem. Because ds's open house is tonight, at a different school... and I missed HIS last year due to MY school schedule (I was in college)

So, I guess this year there is no choice but to skip dd's open house and attend ds's. I hate that though... because I like to hear from all the teachers and get a feel for their personalities. All I can hope for now is that dd doesn't have a snit fit over it. She usually says she doesn't care, but acts like she does... and we all know that ACTIONS speak louder than WORDS!

In other news, my son and I reformatted all 3 computers last night. I still have to reinstall a few things such as a driver for my scanner and some of my apps, but so far so good. I'll miss my old Windows 2000 partition though... although I'm thinking that may have been the problem, that it may not have had enough security.

Reformatting

I've dropped in to use a computer at the college I recently graduated from... I had started to reformat my computer at home and my ds called to let me know he's on his way home from his business trip (yay!) and can assist me. (Thank God! I already erased my entire hard drive... didn't feel like getting rid of that searchmiracle nonsense the DIFFICULT way, i.e. registry editing, etc.)

So the cavalry is on its way. But I was sitting in the parking lot where he works awaiting his arrival, reading my book (Siro, not bad, BTW) and he called to say the weather has delayed him and it will be another hour before he arrives.

I needed to log onto blogger away from home anyway... so I could remove the aforementioned link... and it's done now. Big sigh of relief.

Now. I have to reinstall all my programs, etc. once I've reformatted... prolly take me a few days to get everything the way I want it again. Plus all the windows updates, AV and SPYWARE PREVENTION. But what I want to know is how can I prevent that searchmiracle thing from getting back in? I don't know how it got there in the first place!!!

Link nightmare

My computer is infected by this nasty searchmiracle thingy that makes its own hyperlinks... and it turned "anal" on my sidebar into a freaking hyperlink and now I can't seem to edit it out. Blogger allows me to save my template changes, but I haven't been able to republish the damn blog. I'm trying from an uninfected computer this time, and it still won't work. Hopefully it's just a temporary blogger glitch and I'll be able to fix it later... ugh. I hear I'm going to have to either edit the registry or reformat to get rid of this thing. Sigh... either way, I'm in for a pull-my-hair-out-by-the-roots fun day.

Win $100,000 just for being registered to vote!

Sorry, my overseas friends... this one's only in America... but go to Body-for-LIFE to see how YOU could win $100,000 too!
: )

No! Not MY computer!!!

Ugh. Well... now that the power is back on, I'm having trouble with my blasted machine. I'm hoping it's not what I THINK it is... because of the two possibilities, neither is satisfactory.

1. My 5 year old motherboard is finally giving out on me... (quite likely)
2. I have a virus or spyware screwing my machine up (also likely... even though I have up-to-date AV protection, I've never installed any spyware dohickeys... and when I try to go to add/remove programs now, the computer quits responding, and afterward the mouse won't work, even after rebooting.

Anyone have any ideas?
: (

Hope things are going better for all of you!

Internet cafes are awesome!

Well... no power yet at home, and a neighbor charged my cell phone, but I guess it keeps losing its signal and searching so it's gone dead again already! Forutnately, the proprietor of this 'net cafe is letting me charge it back up again while I'm here.

I may send the kids to a neighbor's for showers later if we still don't have electricity. Not gonna make 'em get a cold shower... Bob, Frank and I can go to the gym to shower... but not the younger ones. I especially want to make sure Sarah and Tim get one since they'll probably go to school tomorrow... which they WANT to do because it's air-conditioned there!

Well... that's all my news for now. Pretty boring, huh? The most exciting thing in my life right now is the book I borrowed from a neighbor to help pass the time. It's a spy novel... not normally what I would choose, but surprise surprise! I'm actually enjoying it. It's by a guy named Ignatius. He's not bad!

No Power, but not Homeless!

We have been without power since 2pm yesterday, but I came to the internet cafe in downtown Hollywood, to satisfy my addiction, LOL

Honestly though... it'll cost me a fortune to be online very much, so I'd best maximize my time here. I wish it were different, but I've got to take what I can get!

It could be several days before we get power again, and even then, I'm just hoping that the NEXT hurricane (Ivan) doesn't hit us!
Ugh.

Still waiting... but here's what the ugly picture looks like right now! Posted by Hello

Waiting, waiting, waiting...

Hey Aaron! That sounds like one of YOUR titles!

But seriously. The storm has arrived, and it's moving SOOOOOOOOO slowly. I'll be lucky if we don't lose power at some point... I fully expect that we will. Not much we can do about that... it's not like we could afford a generator or anything... and even if we COULD afford one, we'd have nowhere to keep it when we're NOT using it!

Yes. We need a larger home, but unless I start earning some money we won't be moving just yet. Might as well get used to the cramped quarters... could be like this for a LONG time!

On the other hand, cramped or not, right now I'm just hoping a tornado embedded in the hurricane doesn't demolish it and leave us homeless!

Yikes. I'll be glad when the storm has passed... but there's another one right behind it. Hopefully THAT one will go somewhere else, though... like curve up north into the Atlantic where no one will be harmed by it.

Reboot

Okay. Power surge. Now I have to reopen all the windows I had open and get back to what I was doing. But when the power went out I was commenting on someone's blog...

I have no idea whose. Maybe I can find it in the history, although I doubt it since I was "shut down improperly" but I'll look.

How to prepare for a hurricane

I got this in an email, and it was amusing... so I thought I'd share. Sorry it's so long...

Florida Hurricane Preparation

You all should be aware of hurricane preparations, but in case you need a refresher course:

We're about to enter the peak of the hurricane season. Any minute now, you're going to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to some radar blob out in
the Atlantic Ocean and making two basic meteorological points.

(1) There is no need to panic.
(2) We could all be killed.

Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in Florida. If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one."

Based on our insurance industry experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1:
Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days.

STEP 2:
Put these supplies into your car.

STEP 3:
Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween. Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will foolishly stay here in Florida.

We'll start with one of the most important hurricane preparedness items:

HOMEOWNERS' INSURANCE:

If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance. Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, as long as your home meets two basic requirements:

(1) It is reasonably well-built, and
(2) It is located in Wisconsin

Unfortunately, if your home is located in Florida, or any other area that might actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies would prefer not
to sell you hurricane insurance, because then they might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they got into the insurance business in the first place. So you'll have to scrounge around for an insurance company, which will charge you an annual premium roughly equal to the replacement value of your house. At any moment, this company can drop you like used dental floss.

SHUTTERS:

Your house should have hurricane shutters on all the windows, all the doors. There are several types of shutters, with advantages and disadvantages:

Plywood shutters: The advantage is that, because you make them yourself, they're cheap.

Sheet-metal shutters: The advantage is that these work well, once you get them all up. The disadvantage is that once you get them all up, your hands will be
useless bleeding stumps, and it will be December.

Roll-down shutters: The advantages are that they're very easy to use, and will definitely protect your house. The disadvantage is that you will have to sell
your house to pay for them.

Hurricane-proof windows: These are the newest wrinkle in hurricane protection: They look like ordinary windows, but they can withstand hurricane winds! You can be sure of this, because the salesman says so. He lives in Nebraska.

Hurricane Proofing your property:

As the hurricane approaches, check your yard for movable objects like barbecue grills, planters, patio furniture, visiting relatives, etc...

You should, as a precaution, throw these items into your swimming pool (if you don't have a swimming pool, you should have one built immediately). Otherwise, the
hurricane winds will turn these objects into deadly missiles.

EVACUATION ROUTE:

If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route planned out. (To determine whether you live in a low-lying area, look at your driver's
license; if it says "Florida," you live in a low-lying area). The purpose of having an evacuation route is to avoid being trapped in your home when a major storm
hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic traffic jam several miles from your home, along with two hundred thousand other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be lonely.

HURRICANE SUPPLIES:

If you don't evacuate, you will need a mess of supplies. Do not buy them now! Florida tradition requires that you wait until the last possible minute, then go to the supermarket and get into vicious fights with strangers over who gets the last can of cat food. In addition to food and water, you will need the
following supplies:

23 flashlights.
At least $167 worth of batteries that turn out, when the power goes off, to be the wrong size for the flashlights.

Bleach. (No, I don't know what the bleach is for. NOBODY knows what the bleach is for, but it's traditional, so GET some!)

A big knife that you can strap to your leg. (This will be useless in a hurricane, but it looks cool.)

A large quantity of raw chicken, to placate the alligators. (Ask anybody who went through Andrew; after the hurricane, there WILL be irate alligators.)

$35,000 in cash or diamonds so that, after the hurricane passes, you can buy a generator from a man with no discernible teeth.

Of course these are just basic precautions. As the hurricane draws near, it is vitally important that you keep abreast of the situation by turning on your
television and watching TV reporters in rain slickers stand right next to the ocean and tell you over and over how vitally important it is for everybody to stay
away from the ocean.

Good luck, and remember: Its great living in Paradise.

The wages of ignorance

Okay. Call me dense... but until I read another blogger's post (who was doing the same thing) I didn't realize that when your comments get emailed to me that I couldn't just hit "reply" and respond. I guess when I do that my email just gets swallowed up by cyberspace? Have any of you actually received those replies?

Anyway, the reason I'm saying this is that I'm sorry if I haven't answered everyone... I'll have to do so on the blog from now on. Duh!

*sheepish grin*

Hurricane Warning

Well... they just upgraded the watch for our coast to a warning, and the storm continues to look like it's not going to turn, but we all know how unpredictable they can be. Unfortunately, I can't even hope that it goes elsewhere, since if it does it will hit someone else I care about. The only hope is the wild card hope that it will take a hairpin turn and head out into the north Atlantic region... preferably missing the islands.
: 0

We don't want any!

That damn storm hasn't turned at all. I'm going to be spending most of today doing hurricane prep. If anything notable occurs, I'll drop in and post it... but for now, I'd better get my ass up and get to work.

Should we or shoudn't we?

Okay. We're watching this hurricane, and it's looking more and more like it might hit us. So should we go hog-wild crazy and board up, or wait and see? My husband is working 12 hour shifts from now through the weekend (7:30pm-7:30am) so he's going to be zonked tomorrow, and maybe on Friday too.

On the other hand, if it really looks like it's gonna hit us, he'll probably be given time off work... (there goes that precious OT!) and my son might be given some time off as well. In which case they'll have plenty of time to deal with Hurricane prep. Too bad we can't afford all the supplies that people are recommended to lay in...

Google

I just joined the Google Ad program... and put a Google search box on my site. It doesn't search my site very well yet... but here's hoping that once the bots crawl my pages well, the search feature will improve.

A blading we will go...

Hooray! I got me a pair of rollerblades from a wonderful lady on freecycle

I picked them up on my way to the gym this morning, and I'm looking forward to using them... albeit a bit slowly at first since I don't have ANY protective gear (and I'd rather buy that new than get it used, since it's something we SWEAT LIKE CRAZY into!)

Went up to level 3 on the stepmill this morning. I wonder if I'll EVER reach a point where I can work out on that machine without wanting to quit halfway through my 20 minutes? Ugh. It's a murderous piece of equipment. But I know it's shaping me up, so I'll endure the torture.

Got a PTA meeting tonight for Timmy's school. Normally I wouldn't give a rat's ass about such things, but I'm dying to know what's going on with the building, and when we'll be able to move in and quit attending the alternate site. Plus I'm hoping I can FINALLY get the shirts I already paid for... it's getting tiresome washing the same 2 shirts over and over for him to wear.

Found out yesterday that our martial arts classes will always be on Monday and Wednesday now, weather permitting (since they're held outside in the yard)

It's nice to know when to expect to have a class because the last few times caught me off guard and I had to hurry up, get ready, and rush over there. I try not to miss lessons, except when my throat was sore and I had Oded visiting... because he's teaching me for free and I want to show that I appreciate it by being diligent. I do hope, however, that he'll let me tidy up his website for him one of these days to repay his kindness.

Up for grabs...

Okay. I'm gonna jump on the proverbial bandwagon here and offer my gmail invitations. The only requirement is that you have to leave me an interesting comment. Being as how I've hardly had any people leave comments, I figure these invitations probably aren't going anywhere... but who knows? Here goes!

Hurricane Frances?

Well, my husband wanted to go to the store and "stock up" this morning, so I agreed to wait 'til he did that to go to the gym... then he came home and checked for news on the storm and said "you can go ahead and go to the gym if you want, I don't think it's going to hit us."

I told him to go ahead and go, now that I'd already settled in to wait! We still need stuff from the store, so it's not like it'll be a wasted trip. Sigh. Men.

He's supposed to be getting my car fixed this weekend... I hope that doesn't fall through, cuz I really miss driving my cushy New Yorker! (And I'm a little hesitant to keep looking for a job when transportation is so iffy!)

Nutty bunch?

Okay. I was a little lazy about the blog earlier today, but you really should check out those links! Interesting stuff. I got it off another blog...

I've taken to blogsurfing a lot. Leaving comments wherever something catches my interest. So if you came here because I commented on your blog... hope you enjoy my eclectic mix of stuff.

Anyway...

My primary activity for the day was to join a bunch of people who participate in a local homeschooling group for a pool party... and it was pretty wild! I found out that the daughter of the hostess had a picture of MY OLDEST SON mooning the camera (with 3 other people...)

Pretty strange considering I had never met these people before. Small world. What can I say?

I won't go over the rest of what transpired there... since the partygoers may stumble across my blog and disapprove of being mentioned in such manner. Suffice it to say that they seem nutty enough to possibly admit my son and me to their group, LOL

Still waiting

Haven't heard yet about that job I wanted so much.
: (

I did make it to the gym and had a great lower body workout this morning... stopped off on the way home and used up the last of my available credit to purchase some flaxseed oil to go in my nutrition shakes, too. They blend up creamier with the oil than without it... I wanted UDO's but couldn't afford it. Sigh... it sucks to be broke.

Second interview

I went back to the place I'm most interested in working today... and it went like this:

Had a nice time visiting with Bob the cat in the "lobby" (more like a waiting room...) while I read my book. (Did I mention I'm reading "White Oleander"?)

While I sat there reading, the strangest thing happened. Well, I thought it was strange, but judge for yourself:

The mailman came in. (No, I know THAT'S not strange, LOL) He went up to the window, where he spoke to Michelle, the current office manager. She's the one who's moving away... that's why they're conducting interviews.

None of it sounds terribly strange yet, does it? Of course not. But the next part is.

He started chit-chatting about whether or not the business had any other names, and the names of adjacent businesses... as well as asking her if she smoked. ??? Very odd. But that's not all...

Here's the strange part of the conversation, at least, my paraphrase thereof:

Mailman: They give you enough breaks around here? Do you smoke?
Michelle: I try not to...
Mailman: What do you smoke? Newport? Marlboro Lights?
Michelle: I started off with Newports, but... (the rest I didn't hear)
Mailman: Here. Have a cigarette. I have some right here.

And he proceeded to take out TWO cigarettes, giving them to her. Very odd.

He left, talking to himself about the ballet and a half (the address next door was 29 1/2)

Am I overly suspicious, or does it sound like this guy was on drugs?

Moving right along...

When I went in the back and was interviewed, I found it to be a very pleasant experience. I like the people there, and their attitude. I'm very interested in the industry (advertising, commercials) and would love to learn more. Ultimately, I think I could benefit them a great deal with the skills I possess, and while I have no experience as an office manager, per se... I feel quite capable of mastering all that's necessary.

He even whetted my appetite by mentioning that there might be some writing involved! Short descriptive passages for the website, and perhaps for some commercials too. Hmmmmmmmm sounds good to me!

Overwhelming success!

This morning's karaoke show at the college went over GREAT! So well, in fact, that we had to do it after class again, just so people would GO back to class, LOL

Here's hoping that tonight's show meets with equal enthusiasm!

Who wants a bunch of annoying kids?

OMG they're giving me headaches today. I can't stand it. The baby has started to be a whiny crybaby all day long, crying about every little thing... for the past week. Pretty much since Sarah & Timmy went back to school.
: (

On a positive note, I went by the karaoke place today to make sure I was clear on everything, since I'll be in a rush tomorrow morning when I go by there.

I should probably get in the shower, but I really just don't feel like it. I'm tired and I'd like to go to bed, but of course, that would be stupid because Bob's alarm will just go off in an hour and wake me back up, and cause me to be all disoriented. I wish to God he'd get put on day shift. I'm tired of this schedule. It sucks for ME. He probably likes it... but I think he likes it less and less as it gets harder and harder for him to get any sleep in the daytime. Too bad that's not enough incentive for him to give up the measly shift differential he gets for working graveyards...

Crap. There she goes whining and crying AGAIN! I give up. I think I'm going to log off and go bang my head against a wall.

An entry in Zoe's blog reminded me of this newsletter I used to get... but it probably started bouncing from the email box it was sent to. Anyway, I just went and re-subscribed... with an email I know won't bounce. (It's through my website so it's unlimited in size)

Don't believe everything you read, LOL

I'm India!

A great thinker and leader, you have a great deal of power despite
being really poor.  You like movies, cows, and you probably are a vegetarian and may
even be a pacifist.  You've probably been moving away from pacifism lately, though,
as you get more and more defensive that everyone around you is trying to hurt you.
How about a nice game of chess?

Flame Wars

In my Body for Life Women's group there has been a ridiculous argument going on all day... which resulted in the banishment of one or more members. I don't understand why people have to resort to childish name-calling and other such nonsense... maybe it would help if they could go down to the schoolyard and duke it out?

Anyway, it's been a mundane Monday. Had a great lower body workout at the gym, and that's where my fitness story for today ends. I've eaten nothing but junk food. But I am going to start posting my meal plans to encourage accountablility... starting tonight, with tomorrow's fare. Now, I sure hope I can stick to it, or I'll look like a real buffoon! Nutrition is 80% of fitness... you can work out 'til the cows come home, but if you keep stuffing your face with brownies and Burger King, guess what? You're going to look more like a cow than a superhero. If you want that superhero physique, you can't just talk the talk, you gotta walk the walk. Which means 6 small meals a day, eating every 2 to 3 hours.

I guess part of the reason I've had so much trouble sticking to my nutrition plan is that the kids won't eat the stuff I'm supposed to, so I feel badly about having my husband purchase extra things for me when his income is tight. Gotta get a J.O.B.!

Did I mention that I nailed down the deal to host the karaoke on Wednesday? Gonna get paid what I asked for the gig... but I have to set up and tear down twice. (It's 1/2 hour in the morning and 1/2 hour in the evening... and in between I have to put the gear up for safekeeping, else I'd have to "babysit" it all day!) Incidentally, the gear is being rented from Sing-a-Song

Yes, Wednesday and Thursday are going to be busy, busy days for me. But I'm ready!

T.I.G.E.R.S.

Click on the link to find out about the show we saw today at Parrot Jungle.

Sooooooo tired...

Well, Oded took Joey, Selena and me to Parrot Jungle today. It was exhausting! We fed the parrots, saw two shows, walked hither thither and yon... in drenching humidity. I was a little more intelligent in my apparel than yesterday... I wore shorts and flip-flops instead of jeans and sneakers... but flip-flops don't provide much support for prolonged walking, so my feet feel like they've gone through a meat grinder at the moment.

I've been really lax about BFL for the past week or so... well, really, ever since Rex came (the 4th) so I need to get my ass in gear and back into it this week. I've been lazy about weight training, but not so much about cardio... and the nutrition plan? Uh... well... yeah. Not.

500 Miles

No... I didn't walk 500 miles today, but I sure feel like I did!

After 20 minutes on the stepmill this morning, and driving out to drop something off at a GORGEOUS $250-350,000 home... I went with my Israeli friend Oded to walk around Miami's South Beach.

It was SOOOOOOOO hot! I can't believe I was idiotic enough to wear long pants... I should have been wearing shorts. Ugh. When will I learn?

We had a great time and ate some delicious food... but honestly, didn't do much other than walk walk walk. We took my 2 year old daughter Selena with us, and she had fun... wanted to pet every doggie we saw. When I get a job I think I'm gonna buy me a dog. (Or adopt one from a shelter, as the case may be...)

When we came home, we lit a fire in my dish thingy that I got from freecycle the other day and I played a few songs for Oded. That was fun... but really wiped me out. I am exhausted now! So I reckon it's time I dropped into bed for some much-needed zzzzzzzzzzzzzz's. Nighty nite!

Magyss Studios

I just had to plug Maggie's work... she's fabulous. And a very good motivator, too! Awesome lady, all the way 'round. 'Nuff said... now click on the link and go look at her art!
: )

Long drives and short tempers

Well... I took 3 of the kids with me to Kendall (about an hour away from here) to meet Rosi from the freecycle group. It was wonderful to meet her, and had a nice time. I played her some of my songs, she showed me some of her photos and how she does her scrapbooking. My kids were a pain... I don't think I'll take any of them with me next time I go to visit her!

My friend Oded from Israel is supposed to be arriving on my doorstep any time now. I hope he didn't already come and go, having knocked and gotten no answer from my sleeping daughter... (she always goes straight to bed after school because she has to get up so damn early to catch the bus at 6... which she missed today so her brother had to drive her...)

Dunno if I mentioned it yesterday, but I've been called back for a second interview with Biscayne Productions, which is a job I think would be perfect for me because: 1)I can utilize skills I've acquired in my most recent jobs and college education; 2)I can learn on-the-job things that I was considering for my next college course(s) such as audio/video production, graphics/animation, and marketing; 3)It's close to home, so transportation would never be an issue; and 4)It's very close to the Charter School Timmy is enrolled in, so I'd feel good about that. I think there were some other reasons I left out, but the bottom line is that I really want this job and I hope they're going to feel I'm a good fit with their company and the available position.

Got really great news from Bob yesterday... our health insurance is changing, and we're apparently going back to one that I REALLY liked a lot. Hopefully this means I can FINALLY go the the OB/GYN I prefer for a checkup, as he dropped the insurance we're currently on.

Gosh... I must be boring you to tears. Well, if you've read this far, bravo! You must really like me... either that or your life is even more boring than mine, in which case I truly pity you. However, I'm working earnestly to make mine a bit more interesting, so bear with me, please.

Finally, I think I've fairly well nailed down a deal to provide the karaoke entertainment for two 1/2 hour (break-time) shows at my alma mater (Florida Career College) next Wednesday. That should be a lot of fun. I have no idea what I'm going to end up with in the way of payment, but something is always better than nothing, eh? If I can get $100 out of it, then I can pay the rest of my credit card balance and avoid finance charges. (I like using my cc for online purchases, especially when there's no s&h, making the product cheaper than if I went down the street to buy it!)

Hysterical Cat Duet

Another day in paradise?

Well... so far it's been busy... but it's settling down now. I dropped Timmy off at the beach to go on his field trip to Metrozoo... then went back to the house I was at last night to pick up something I forgot: the poker.

See, last night I got something from a freecycler that I had been wanting for a LONG time: A firepit. I had dug one in my yard, lined it with stone, and we had lovely fires out there for about a year, then someone called the fire dept. on me and they told me I couldn't do that anymore. With this dish thingy, I can go back to having my wonderful "campfires" LEGALLY. Awesome!

After I went and got the poker I made it to Bally's for my cardio, and waited for 1/2 hour for someone who didn't show up. She called when I was on the way home & said she's going to come by my house, since she was running late and missed catching me at Bally's.

Now I have a ton of things to do... but most of them probably won't get done. I'm too busy moderating my freecycle board and talking to a friend who needs help. (Any excuse to avoid the housework, LOL)

Gonna vote for John Kerry? Read this:

I don't think so.

What's up doc?

I think I'm going to have to go see the doctor. A few days ago I woke up with a stiff neck and sore jaw... so I thought perhaps I had been gritting my teeth in my sleep. However, it has since resolved to a lump on the left side of my neck, which I'm hoping is just a swollen gland. I wonder if it's related to the fact that I just quit smoking?

Anyway... I didn't work out today, and probably won't now 'til I get an a-ok from my doc... I'm really feeling tired, so I'm pretty sure I am sick because I usually don't feel like going back to bed and sleeping the day away unless I'm truly ill.

Things should be winding down a bit here for now... I have someone coming by to pick up the box of miscellaneous assorted purses I put up on freecycle to give away... and I'm not going to post any more offers 'til I'm feeling better.

In other news... Timmy has his first field trip tomorrow... to Miami Metrozoo. That should be fun for them. Amazing to have a field trip the very first week of school!

Also... I corrected a link I had mistakenly mislabeled in my sidebar. It's Zen and the art of GUITAR maintenance... not MOTORCYCLE. Duh... must have been watching "Will & Grace" that night, LOL

Busier than usual...

I got up at 4am today, to go to the gym at opening time (5am) for 20 minutes of sheer torture on the "stepmill" (a cardio machine that looks like a short escalator) Please... no "short bus" quips, here, LOL

So now I've showered and I'm waiting for Timmy to be ready for school. I have to drop him off at the beach for school this week because they're not quite done building the new Charter School yet. It's kind of a drag because although he's AT the beach, the school is not allowed to take them out TO the beach. What a tease!

It's in the posh new Westin Diplomat Hotel's Convention Center. It took me a full hour of waiting in line to pick him up yesterday... but because of all the confusion, they're offering free before- and after-care, so I think today I'll wait an extra hour before picking him up to let the mad rush pass. Hope it helps!

I put a bunch of stuff on freecycle and several people are coming by to claim them: a weight bench that I discovered I really don't like... a rattan chair that just doesn't "fit in" around here, and several partial computers for parts. That's why I went to the gym & showered so early... I don't want to miss any of the people coming by. Especially Shannon, whose kids won a ride to school (from KISS 99.9 to whom I posted a link, but apparently their website is bogus!) in a limousine, and was told that she and her husband may get to keep it for two hours... so if they do, they're going to come by here IN IT. LOL... that should be funny, riding around to freecycler's houses picking up stuff in a limo. What a picture!

Well... 'nuff said. Time to go get dressed & take Timmy to school. Ciao!

What's YOUR color?

I am dark violet
#9400D3

Your dominant hues are blue and magenta. You're the one who goes to all the parties but doesn't quite fit in at every one... you know what you want, but are afraid of what the world might think of it. You're a little different and that's okay with them, and if you're smart it's okay with you too.

Your saturation level is very high - you are all about getting things done. The world may think you work too hard but you have a lot to show for it, and it keeps you going. You shouldn't be afraid to lead people, because if you're doing it, it'll be done right.

Your outlook on life is brighter than most people's. You like the idea of influencing things for the better and find hope in situations where others might give up. You're not exactly a bouncy sunshine but things in your world generally look up.

Hernia?

I've had this pain adjacent to my navel... I'm hoping it's not a hernia cuz that would really screw up my fitness plans!

Been a pretty busy day today. Bob set up my new weight bench out under the mango tree... but he didn't put my new keyboard drawer on, so I still have to put up with this damn tv tray. : (

Doing laundry and gathering up old sheets/towels to give to a lady who's coming by tomorrow... she'll be using them for an animal shelter. She's also bringing me some soft-sided coolers (lunch "boxes") that I figured the kids could use for school (if they WILL)

Grumpy as hell. Between giving up cigarettes 2 1/2 days ago and PMS (which will hopefully end tomorrow, when "Aunt Flo" arrives, LOL) I could bite someone's head clean off right now without blinking an eye.

I just started a new freecycle group, because so many of the people posting are SOOOOOOO far away from me! I hope lots of locals join and start giving stuff away to each other. This is exciting!

Ugh!

My open mic. night turned out to be a 2 hour performance by me... and my equipment was all messed up, partially through the actions of the people at the restaurant. I am going to call and cancel it tomorrow.

I feel bad because I put a lot of effort into promoting it... but there's not much I can do. My equipment is messed up, and I'm too exhausted from all the other stuff I do to care.

I don't want to get out of practice again though, so I intend to go to some open mic. nights in the area, and back to the folk club events, too.

Sigh. Very disappointing turnout. I DID have a FEW people to play to, all the way up to the normal closing time of the restaurant... but it was a bummer not to have any other open mic. night participants or more of an audience, especially people from school/personal friends.

It doesn't help, either, that I'm stressed out from giving up tobacco and PMS time all at once. But I got $100 from my son to quit smoking, so... that helps. Every time I THINK I'd like a cigarette, I remind myself of that $100!

Live A Life That Matters

I got this in an email, and ever since, I've been trying to track down who the author of this piece is. If you can tell me, please let me know!
: )

Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end.

There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.

All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.

Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.

It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.

Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.

So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire.

The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.

It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived, at the end.

It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.

Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave.

What will matter is not your success, but your significance.

What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.

What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.

What will matter is not your competence, but your character.

What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.

What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you.

What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.

Choose to live a life that matters.

Busy Day

I had to get up this morning to drop off stuff to the same lady I was getting some stuff from. (Great coincidence!) I really love freecycle. I can see myself actually decluttering this house over time. And helping others in the process! Awesome!

Then we went to the gym and I realized I'd forgotten my purse and didn't have my membership card... but it was okay. They let me in anyway. I gotta put that card in my gym bag, though, so it can't happen again.

The guy who said he was gonna come get the size 34 shorts hasn't showed up, though. If he doesn't show up by tomorrow morning I'm gonna let the next respondant have them!

I gotta take Sarah and her friend Zoe to Olsen for orientation at 2, then Jiu Jitsu at 4... shower, load my gear into the car for my gig, and leave. It's going to be a LONG evening. I sure hope lots of people show up for my open mic. night!

Rod Stewart lookalike

I think I forgot to mention that the martial arts instructor who's been giving me lessons is also a musician... and plays gigs as a Rod Stewart lookalike. He's pretty good... at both the impersonation routine AND Jiu Jitsu.

Bob went with me for cardio today... his first try at using a treadmill. He did pretty well. I've just moved up from walking fast to jogging on it... and got up to 4mph for my "high point" today. Long way to go, but good start!

I went for another job interview today. I really like the company... it's close to home and I'd have the chance to learn some things on the job that I was planning to go back to school... and PAY to learn.

Well, I can only assume that whatever job I get will be the one the Good Lord wants me to have.

I have to take my PA to the open mic. night location tonight to run a sound check with the CD player that they want to use in between sets/performers (if there are not many... if there are a lot of people, there won't be any breaks.)

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy

Wow! This stuff is HARD... I got a helluva workout today in the lesson, after I already did a good UBWO at Bally's this morning. I can see how my caloric needs are going to rise quickly as I continue along this course. I was a little hesitant to show up again today, but I feel like it's important to me to know how to defend myself. One never knows when such knowledge might be needed. Hopefully never... but better safe than sorry!

Jiujitsu

I forgot to mention yesterday that I spoke to my neighbor who give martial arts classes out in his yard... I offered to work on his website in exchange for classes, since I'm broke, and he said "come on over and join in!"

So I went over there and learned a little bit... how to disarm a gunman, how to take someone down (even if they're bigger than you) and the proper way to fall. I have a few bruises... but so far so good. I'm just a little slow on the uptake. I wonder how long I'll have to keep at it before it comes naturally!

Tuesday, August 10, 2004

Back on track!

Well... I made it to the gym this morning, which was a tough workout on the stairmaster. Even tougher after taking almost a whole week off of working out! (Fri-Mon) I'm glad to be getting back to the routine, though.

Now... if I can just get my butt in gear to get some housework caught up! Ugh.

The Ant Philosophy by Jim Rohn

Over the years I've been teaching children about a simple but powerful concept - the ant philosophy. I think everybody should study ants. They have an amazing four-part philosophy, and here is the first part: ants never quit. That's a good philosophy. If they're headed somewhere and you try to stop them; they'll look for another way. They'll climb over, they'll climb under, they'll climb around. They keep looking for another way. What a neat philosophy, to never quit looking for a way to get where you're supposed to go.

Second, ants think winter all summer. That's an important perspective. You can't be so naive as to think summer will last forever. So ants are gathering in their winter food in the middle of summer.

An ancient story says, "Don't build your house on the sand in the summer." Why do we need that advice? Because it is important to be realistic. In the summer, you've got to think storm. You've got to think rocks as you enjoy the sand and sun. Think ahead.

The third part of the ant philosophy is that ants think summer all winter. That is so important. During the winter, ants remind themselves, "This won't last long; we'll soon be out of here." And the first warm day, the ants are out. If it turns cold again, they'll dive back down, but then they come out the first warm day. They can't wait to get out.

And here's the last part of the ant philosophy. How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? All that he possibly can. What an incredible philosophy, the "all-that-you-possibly-can" philosophy.

Wow, what a great seminar to attend - the ant seminar. Never give up, look ahead, stay positive and do all you can.

To Your Success,
Jim Rohn

Job interview

I was getting ready to drop Rex off at the airport and go to the gym when I got a call back on one of the resumes I emailed out last night. I really like the people, and it seemed to be mutual, so here's hoping!

I just found out about this AWESOME group that matches up people who need stuff with people who are GIVING AWAY stuff! Check it out!

Sigh

Well, the starter's fixed, and the radiator, thermostat, and starter relay have been replaced also. NOW the fan on the radiator seems to have quit... and there's a leak down under the engine, somewhere near the water pump. : (

Just can't seem to catch a break. I got a Sunday paper today, to start looking for a job... but I can't very well take a job if my car will overheat on the way to and from work every day.

Went canoeing with Rex and Joey today... and it rained on us, which was nice because it was SOOOOOOOOO hot! Afterward we picked up a bunch of pizza. Now I have a headache, so I think I might just go take a nap. Exciting, huh?

Saturday, August 07, 2004

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I finally got my car home today. It still needs a starter, but banging on the starter made it work... and it still does. It probably wouldn't if I tried to go somewhere, though. : (

Bob said he'll go get me a starter tomorrow... and I also want to get a Sunday paper to look for a job. Sometimes the good ones aren't posted online. I really need to start earning money again. Being broke SUCKS!

Rex and I went to see I, Robot tonight. I enjoyed the movie a great deal. Will Smith cracks me up! When we left the theater, I kept expecting to look around and see robots, LOL

After that, we went to eat at Gusto's. Good food... but I'm off BFL... and probably won't get back to it 'til Rex goes home. He spent so much of his time here fixing my car, I feel bad... so I don't want to leave him sitting here while I go to the gym. I know I'm going to really FEEL IT when I get back to it on Tuesday (or maybe Monday evening... he flies out of here in the afternoon.

I'm pretty tired, but I wanted to update my blog. I think I've been really good about coming here every day... although it might possibly be the most boring blog in existence!

Mission accomplished

I presented my speech at graduation... without sounding stupid, LOL... and now that all the excitement is over... I'm bushed! Wow! What a day.

Rex got my car fixed this morning... so we drove to MAE to get guitar strings and put up a flyer for my open mic. nights that are starting next weekend. So far so good, right?

Wrong. When we came out, the car wouldn't start, and since I had to go to the graduation ceremony tonight, we just had to hop on the bus and leave the car there. I hope no one disturbs it tonight. They warned us as we were leaving that it was okay to leave it there, but they couldn't be responsible for any damage that may occur. : (

THEN... when Frank got home from work, HIS car was smoking. I swear I'll FREAK if the Saturn quits running right now. How would I get to my open mic.? Ugh.

Well... with any luck we'll get my car running tomorrow. Just don't know if it's the starter, solenoid, alternator, or even bad wires! I hate electrical probs. They can be so hard to diagnose. I mean, if you replace all of the foregoing and it still won't work... and you know it's NOT the battery... what then? Sigh.

I did it... and I didn't fall down!

Well, I ran (slow jog) on the treadmill for the first time today. It was really scary for the first few steps, then I enjoyed it... other than the fact that I DEFINITELY need to wear a bra with better support when I'm going to jog!

I didn't put my hands on the handrails at all, even during the walking parts, when I could have. Actually, I found that walking on the treadmill was EASIER without holding on. Something about swinging your arms really seems to make a difference. Who knew? Not me!

In other news, Rex and I went to Discount Auto Parts and ordered a new radiator for my car... we have to go back at 5 to get it. It will be nice to have my car back on the road again! (Part of the old one broke off when it was removed, or we might have just gotten it fixed... but I think Rex is right... it's better to get a new one and know that you won't have to worry about THAT part again for the time being.)

The weather sux. Thunderstorms and such... rain by itself isn't so bad, but thunder and lightning always make me really edgy.

The President's Challenge - You're it. Get fit!

I've joined the BFL Cadets... a group headed by a girl named Julie, whose story is truly inspirational. If you're interested in participating, contact me, and I'll get you in touch with Julie so that she can give you a group/ID number.

Great workout today! Although I got into a bit of a disagreement with someone over pre-workout nutrition. No big deal... everyone always thinks they know better than anyone else...

Trying to get the kids to get off their rear ends and do some chores. This place looks like a tornado swept through here! Ugh. Well... I'm going to get up and fold ten tons of laundry... and try to get things in order a bit before I go to pick up Rex from the airport tonight. I hope his flight from Kansas City is uneventful!

Jorge's Trouble Spots: How to Cope With Temptation

Found this on aol today. Thought I'd link to it from my blog, so I could remember some of the stuff he said...

Oops! Sorry Folks!

I was just checking my web stats for my site and discovered that I had a few boo-boos! I like checking the 404 (file not found) stats, so I can see WHY they weren't found. In some cases, there appears to be no reason. But in the past week I've fixed several mistakes that were keeping people from being able to view my pages.

The one linked to above was something I was really excited about, though... in my last term at school... to put up a categorical song listing. I hope to do more with it in the future... but I'm really pleased with the way the site is coming along at the moment. Can't wait to record/add more MP3's though!

In the eye of the Beholder...nothing is secret.

Netanya is a fellow BFLer with whom I had the pleasure of chatting earlier today. I like her. I hope I get to hear some of her songs one day!

In other news... I'm starting to get really nervous about giving my speech at graduation on Friday. I found out today there will be over 1200 people there! Ack! I hope I can keep my eyes on the paper, LOL

Bob's going out of town without getting my car fixed first thus leaving me stranded. I'm not real happy about that. Sigh. I needs to earn me some income. If anyone is reading this and has some ideas... send 'em my way!

Today I went to do a few things, but nothing noteworthy, so I'll spare any readers the boring details. Suffice it to say... I've had better days. Tomorrow night should be good though, cuz I'm gonna be picking up Rex at the airport! It will be great to have him here for a week. I'm so glad he's able to make it for my graduation!

I met Rex the first year I was online (1999) and we've been best buds ever since. He's like a big brother to me... which is kewl because he never had a sister. Only brothers. Me... I'm an only child, so I CHOOSE my siblings, LOL

I have a friend in India who wants me to sell things online... we'll see if that pans out. I sure would like to earn money without getting a dreaded "9 to 5"! That old J.O.B. (Just Over Broke) thing!

Off to a GREAT start...

Well, today started off all screwy. Frank called and asked us to bring him something, but I thought I knew what he was asking for, and I was wrong. Duh. So then I went back out to take it to him, but he came home to get it. Sigh. Shoulda stayed in bed, LOL.

I have tons of things to do, but really don't feel much like doing ANY of them. We'll see which ones actually get done.

Unfortunately, I really don't have anything terribly interesting to say, so I'm just gonna scoot. If I think of something, I'll blog it later. Ciao!

All set for C2

I had Bob take my "before" photos for my second Body-for-LIFE Challenge today. I will probably wait 'til tomorrow to develop them... since Sunday is my best day for getting things done at home, so it's probably best if I don't go out running around. I'll drop them off at Walgreen's on my way home from the gym... and then I have to go to Timmy's former elementary school to officially withdraw him, since he'll be going to the Charter school.

Since I needed to use up the roll of pictures in the disposable camera, I took a series of photos of the interior of my house, to send to "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition". I ran out of film before I shot the exterior, however, so I will do that in one month, when I do my 4-week BFL photos.

I finally STARTED scanning my "slim pics" for inspiration last night... but I still have several photo albums and tons of loose photos to go through. I would also love it if Martin would scan & email the photos I gave him, which were all the best pictures of me. But since he has to PAY for that, it probably won't happen. : (

I also need to develop a flyer today, to put up at school, where Mike (the Executive Director) gave me permission to advertise my tutoring services. They currently do not have a tutor on Fridays and Saturdays... and I know from experience that many of the people who work full time can ONLY come for help on Saturdays. I'm hoping to get at least a LITTLE business out of it... I am SO tired of being broke! (I know, "wah wah wah... call the wambulance")

Well, I have a fairly busy day planned, so I'd better wrap this up and get going. Maybe later I'll log on and post some of the slim pics I've been finding.

Response so far... (to maxing out on the treadmill)

Well, Renee says to "Run, Forest, Run!" so I think I'll take her advice, and attempt running on the treadmill. It's a little scary... but I'll post how it goes when I try it. (Next Thursday?)Fitness Links

"The Most Important Meeting You'll Ever Attend Are The Meetings You Have With Yourself" by Denis Waitley

I got this article from an ezine called "Your Achievement Ezine"

You are your most important critic. There is no opinion so vitally important to your well being as the opinion you have of yourself. As you read this you're talking to yourself right now. "Let's see if I understand what he means by that... How does that compare with my experiences? - I'll make note of that - try that tomorrow - I already knew that...I already do that." I believe this self-talk, this psycholinguistics or language of the mind can be controlled to work for us, especially in the building of self-confidence and creativity. We're all talking to ourselves every moment of our lives, except during certain portions of our sleeping cycle. We're seldom even aware that we're doing it. We all have a running commentary in our heads on events and our reactions to them.

Be aware of the silent conversation you have with yourself. Are you a nurturing coach or a critic? Do you reinforce your own success or negate it? Are you comfortable saying to yourself, "That's more like it"? "Now we're in the groove." "Things are working out well." "I am reaching my financial goals." "I'll do it better next time."

When winners fail, they view it as a temporary inconvenience, a learning experience, an isolated event, and a stepping-stone instead of a stumbling block.

When winners succeed, they reinforce that success, by feeling rewarded rather than guilty about the achievement and the applause.

When winners are paid a compliment, they simply respond: "Thank you." They accept value graciously when it is paid. They pay value in their conversations with themselves and with other people.

A mark of an individual with healthy self-esteem is the ability to spend time alone, without constantly needing other people around. Being comfortable and enjoying solitary time reveals inner peace and centering. People who constantly need stimulation or conversation with others are often a bit insecure and thus need to be propped up by the company of others.

Always greet the people you meet with a smile. When introducing yourself in any new association, take the initiative to volunteer your own name first, clearly; and always extend your hand first, looking the person in the eyes when you speak.

In your telephone communications at the office or at home, answer the telephone pleasantly, immediately giving your own name to the caller, before you ask who's calling. Whenever you initiate a call, always give your own name up front, before you ask for the party you want and before you state your business. Leading with your own name underscores that a person of value is making the call.

Don't brag. People who trumpet their exploits and shout for service are actually calling for help. The showoffs, braggarts and blowhards are desperate for attention.

Don't tell your problems to people, unless they're directly involved with the solutions. And don't make excuses. Successful people seek those who look and sound like success. Always talk affirmatively about the progress you are trying to make.

As we said earlier, find successful role models after whom you can pattern yourself. When you meet a mastermind, become a master mime, and learn all you can about how he or she succeeded. This is especially true with things you fear. Find someone who has conquered what you fear and learn from him or her.

When you make a mistake in life, or get ridiculed or rejected, look at mistakes as detours on the road to success, and view ridicule as ignorance.

After a rejection, take a look at your BAG. B is for Blessings. Things you are endowed with that you often take for granted like life itself, health, living in an abundant country, family, friends, career. A is for accomplishments. Think of the many things you are proud of that you have done so far. And G is for Goals. Think of your big dreams and plans for the future that motivate you. If you took your BAG - blessings, accomplishments and goals - to a party, and spread them on the floor, in comparison to all your friends and the people you admire, you'd take your own bag home, realizing that you have as much going for yourself as anyone else. Always view rejection as part of one performance, not as a turndown of the performer.

And, enjoy those special meetings with yourself. Spend this Saturday doing something you really want to do. I don't mean next month or someday. This Saturday enjoy being alive and being able to do it. You deserve it. There will never be another you. This Saturday will be spent. Why not spend at least one day a week on You!

Action Idea: Go for one entire day and night without saying anything negative to yourself or to others. Make a game of it. If a friend or colleague catches you saying something negative, you must put 1/2 dollar in a drawer or container toward a dinner or evening out with that person. Do this for one month and see who has had to pay the most money toward the evening.

Maxed out

Well... I went as high as I can go on the treadmill's incline. Who knew that 15 was the highest? I guess if it got any steeper, people would fall off, LOL

I'm gonna query the ladies in the groups and ask 'em what they think I should do. I can either switch to another piece of equipment, or go back down to zero incline and start increasing the speed. I'm a little afraid of running on the treadmill... we'll see what sage advice they all have. I'll post my decision here after I've made up my mind.

BTW... I never did get around to scanning my skinny pics. I really MUST do that soon. If not today, maybe tomorrow...

I had to drive Frank's Jeep (which has no A/C or radio : () to the gym today because Bob needed the car to take the kids shoe shopping. He is running out of money... and I'm starting to get worried. I really need to get a job, but I'm trying to wait until after the graduation ceremony next Friday to begin looking in earnest. I hope it won't be too little, too late!

Frank is out of town on a business trip... should be back late tomorrow. I guess he'll have Monday off. Bob is on vacation this week... so maybe on Monday they can do something together for once. The DID manage to go see Catwoman the other day.

It's so peaceful here right now... with no one else home. I've run a bath, and I'll be getting into it shortly. Gotta reboot the computer anyway... Windows Update.

Quiz: Does Your Weblog Own You?

"

My weblog owns 12.5 % of me.
Does your weblog own you?
"

Edgy today...

I don't know why, but I feel like I'm gonna jump outta my skin. Today's w/o was brutal, and I attribute that primarily to my lack of hunger and subsequent lack of feeding myself yesterday.

I was going to go to the beach today, and hand out flyers for my open mic. nights that are going to be starting in two weeks... but I'm just too tired. What does that say about my chances of being wiped out on Fridays when I start performing? Scary. I'd better start making SURE I eat enough!

This is what I owe $13k for

Here's the degree I finally got. Sorry the pic isn't as clear as I would've liked! Posted by Hello

Just another day in the life...

The Wonderful World of Sister Sunshine
I was on the go all day today, so it feels good to sit here at the computer and be a bit lazy... even though I know I need to do the dread housework!

At the gym, I started a new cardio routine, which I'll be doing every other cardio day from now on. I used the stairmaster: not the one that looks like an elliptical trainer, but the one that looks like a short escalator. BOY! Did I ever feel THAT! I put it on level one... but was already sweating THE FIRST MINUTE! By the 20th minute, I felt like I was gonna die. The only thing that kept me going was thinking of all my fellow BFLers in the Body for Life Women's Club and Women on Body for Life. I know it's one of the best cardio workouts I'm gonna get!

After that, I went to the bank to get some cash out... (boring) and to my school to pick up my degree. They had spelled my name wrong, so they had to reprint it!

While I was there, the kids (Selena & Timmy) and I had a bite to eat (I've been naughty today, and not sticking to my BFL authorized foods...) and I spoke to the Executive Director about putting a flyer up there for private tutoring. He gave me the go-ahead, so I'll be working on that over the weekend, to be ready next week.

I had forgotten to bring a diaper bag with me, so next stop was home to change the baby... and back out to do "school supply" shopping. We were able to get ALMOST everything at Target... but they didn't have the "Agenda/Planner" that Timmy needed, so we went to K-Mart too before we came home... at which time I had to go right back out with Timmy to order his shirts for the new Charter School he's going to be attending this fall. Since they didn't accept cash... I then had to drop by MY bank (the one I hit earlier was my hubby's) and deposit $$$ to cover the check I wrote them!

Since I was already in downtown Hollywood at the bank, I stopped off at the Post Office to check my P.O. Box... and Timmy wanted to walk over and check out the progress they're making on building his school (hard to believe it will be ready in 2 weeks!)

Finally I got to come home and take a much-needed BATH. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh if only I had some Calgon! But it was still refreshing. What a busy day! I can only imagine what it will be like when I get a job... but the income sure will be nice to have!

Just call me the brilliant Retard

Okay. I use a tv tray for the keyboard on my computer, because the little keyboard tray that slides out fell off years ago and was never fixed. (Typical around here)

Soooooooooooo... I sat down here with my post-workout meal, to catch up on email etc. and eat... and set my plate with a hamburger, mushrooms, and green beans between the keyboard and myself. Something I do all the time. What I DON'T do all the time is reach for a pen and knock the whole blasted thing over, dumping all of my food into the keyboard and behind the armoire whose back is loose...

I picked up the part on my keyboard, but the part that fell back behind will have to wait. (I actually ate the part I rescued... but the stuff back behind will go in the garbage.)

I thought of Renee (skwigg) when I did this... and I'm going to copy and paste this blog post into a post to the BFL Women's group which she moderates. I hope she gets a good laugh out of it!
: )

Had a great workout this morning... although it took me almost two hours to complete! Then we stopped at the Supplement Warehouse and got me some more Myoplex Lite. Unless I get a job soon, I don't know how much longer we're going to be able to afford the supplements I take, though. : (

This afternoon I get to (oh joy!) take my daughter Sarah shopping for some school clothes, etc. I will be GLAD when THAT is over!!!

Well, I don't seem to have anything else to say, so I guess it's time to get moving. Ta!

Learning to post pics on Blogspot

This is an old picture, but it's me! Posted by Hello
I still haven't figured out how to put a pic on my profile... but sooner or later I will (hopefully!)
I've been reading Renee's blog Skwigg Blog lately, and it's made me feel guilty about neglecting my own. Unfortunately, my life isn't nearly as interesting as hers at the moment... and when it DOES get more interesting, I may not have enough time to log in and blog it... but I'll try.

Today I was going to change up my routine a bit, and try a stair climber for my cardio, but there was no clock handy, and the watch I use on weight-training days has a broken band, so I couldn't figure out how to measure my time, and went back to the "treadmill room" where there's a clock on the wall. I'll get it figured out eventually. I want to start using the stair climber every other cardio workout, because I'm improving... but I don't want to hit a plateau. It's time to do something a bit different.

Now, to backtrack a bit... I finished school as scheduled, and have been focusing on my weight-training and cardio workouts. I also wanted to get my house cleaned up, but so far I only did the living room. (Baby steps) In time, I'm sure it will all come together.

I took Selena (my two-year old) to the gym with me today, and she had a fun half hour in the nursery. Afterward, we went to the discount vitamin store, where I purchased some more of the liquid Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement I got last time... I love the stuff. It really works well for me. I also got some multivitamins for Bob (my husband) per his request... and then we went to Wal-Mart and picked up his birthday present: a pair of weightlifting gloves. I had wanted to get him a belt... but they didn't have them. I tried not to spend too much, since I had to use my credit card... and he'll end up having to pay for it himself! But I wanted to get him SOMETHING!

Well, I guess I'll wrap up this entry. I'm sure no one wants to hear about the mundane tasks I need to log off and attend to (housework, etc.) but they must be done... oh, and today I want to make my "skinny pictures" a priority. That means I'm going to go through all the photo albums for pictures of me the way I used to look... and want to look again. However, when I looked that way before, it was not a healthy slimness... it was a half-starved, low-energy, flabby thinness. I don't want to be like THAT again... just that SIZE! When I was thin before, I thought I had to starve myself down to 100 lbs to fit into a size 3. Now I know that 130 lbs of muscular leanness will ALSO fit into a size 3... and still have energy for all of life's challenges!

One last note: on a hunch, I got up today and tried on some shorts I haven't fit into for a while... the size 10's fit! Yay! Now to get into the 9's... and then 7's!

Monday, July 26, 2004

Okay. I haven't been here for a while... but I've been reading Renee's blog, and I realized I really ought to start writing in mine again.

I'm going to make this a short entry, though... because I want to look at my blog and see when the last time I wrote was. (Prolly at least four months!)

SISTER SUNSHINE'S DIARY

Here we go again... months go by and I haven't had time to drop by here and say something. Well... here I am... see my dust as I leave again, LOL!

I finish school on June 24th... then maybe I'll get back to things like this a bit more. In the meantime, I had to cancel my re-enrollment at FCC because they suspended the program I wanted to take indefinitely... plus I'm just sick of studying right now. I need a break... time off.

I already have my next three months planned, but I'm too tired right now to fill it all in here... so MAYBE I'll get back before too long to do that!

BTW... My new and improved website is up and running at www.sistersunshine.com

Sunday, March 07, 2004

It's amazing how busy I get... I will be finished with the course I'm currently taking in June, and I've re-enrolled to study graphics/animation next. The classes I'm taking right now are pretty hard, so it takes a lot of my attention and energy. I'm not working, either. I left my job at the beginning of this term. I don't think I could work and keep my 4.0 GPA at the moment. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd rather play it safe. Yahoo! Groups : My Groups

This is so depressing… sitting here looking around at the huge mess that I never have the energy to tackle. And I’d hire a maid… if I had any money to do so with.

Mountains of laundry and dishes… thick film of dust and dirt on shelves, books, and other household contents… sticky floor that seldom gets swept and/or mopped…

I do draw the line at leaving dishes long enough to begin growing science experiments… but even those occasionally turn up, disgusting though they may be.
